There are certain stores that seem to remain sufficiently popular to be
revisited every generation or so. One example that has stood the test of time is
‘Beauty and the Beast’. Is able to combine romance, horror and adventure by
following the relationship man condemned to live his life looking like a monster
was entered into a love affair beautiful self-sufficient young woman. The
origins of the story can be traced back to centuries to when many folktales
began to be written down as the fairytales persisted to modern times. The Walt
Disney Studios added the story to the animated Cannon back in 1991 which
eventually became successful Broadway musical. 1987 concept hit television
depicting the exports of the beast, Vincent in his weekly mission to extricate
the beauty, Catherine, from her current source of mortal peril. This format
underwent some significantly major reformatting in 2012 created the series was
third season is considered here. The first two seasons revolved around Catherine
Chandler (Kristin Kreuk), a detective with the New York City Police Department
in a mysterious connection to a mysterious man, Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan) can
turn into an animalistic be powerful beast in his emotions range out of control
all the circumstances warrant it. There are several physical changes that
accompany this transformation and as many fans have pointed out the alterations
made to his facial structure not all that significant in fall from being as
hideous as people seem to show by their reaction to it. The major storylines
during his initial seasons had been sitting Catherine trying to track down the
people who are responsible for the transformation. It turns out to have been the
result of highly covert human experimentation as part of the super soldier
program recombining human and animal DNA. I do have to give credit to the
writers of the series that they seem to have made great strides in mastering the
technique that very few series have done, know when the central theme of the
season has been played out to its conclusion. After gaining the information he
needs about the animals research project Vincent men has to go after another
beast created by the program who happens to be a lawyer on the staff of the
District Attorney of New York, Gabe Lowen (Sendhil Ramamurthy). The third season
begins shortly after Dave’s sinister machinations have been dealt with and
neutralized.
The third season opens at the Vincent and Catherine have finally defeated
Gabe with the help of Vincent’s best friend since childhood, J.T. Forbes (Austin
Basis). He is now a professor at the New York University and for the longest
time is the only one aware of Vincent’s condition. He has been instrumental in
helping Vincent Cope with his changes. He has been diligently working on a cure
or some means to at least some means to ameliorate the most violent aspect of
his changes. Catherine’s help comes from her best friend and partner on the job,
Tess Vargas (Nina Lisandrello). There’s always been some banter between Tess and
J.T which by the third season has been escalated to a formal declaration of
being in a relationship. Since the four of them now known Vincent secret one of
the most mundane plot lines can finally be extricated from the story. There’s
only so far you can take your best friend apartment not realizing what is going
on with the sudden need for your friend to be secret and distant. It eventually
makes the loyal and smart characters come off as rather dim witted and clueless
which considering one is a research scientist in the a police detective such a
premise is incredulous. By having them been read in to the secret rehab the form
of ‘Scooby Gang’ able to expand the scope of their investigations and actions
the volume more robust foundation for storylines. One more character is brought
into the inner circle of knowing what’s going on, Heather Chandler (Nicole Gale
Anderson), Catherine’s younger sister. Previously she had been a recurring
character word but was promoted to series regular in the third season.
Thankfully the rapist character had been developed she was not relegated to
being yet another damsel in distress. In a manner similar to Catherine and Tess
Heather is a reasonably capable young woman who is not as well trained in
self-defense as the others does prove to be resourceful survivor girl archetype.
With the previous ‘Big Bads’, military/industrial conspiracies and the evil
counterpart to the hero, was time for the right is to find something else able
to engage the viewers a weekly basis. It has been a long-held tradition for
science fiction and horror right is to tap into the current vilified scientific
research. Previous examples of this have been the use of electricity for
resurrecting the dead or radioactivity creating rampaging monstrous mutants.
Currently the most popular branch of scientific research used to be the cause of
horrible calamity this gene splicing and other forms of genetic research. This
had already been introduced as integral to the super soldier program that
Vincent and Gabe were part of now it seems as though strange forms mutations are
occurring at an alarming rate. Catherine and Vincent are asked to join the part
of the Department Of Homeland Security to track down and apprehend people with
unusual and potentially harmful abilities. There is some appropriate
soul-searching on both of their parts as to whether or not they want to be a
part of yet another government controlled project but now that Vincent secret is
out as general knowledge it seems reasonable to have some protection of a level
with some potential form of official enforcement.
If this decision had been rather straightforward with not
been able to any further character development. Once again the writers do manage
to infuse within the new plot threads a number of personal storylines that
provide some balance to the super powered individuals, including Vincent. After
so much trouble bringing the prominent couples of the series together to help
counterbalance the external forces that can still drive the action of the
season. Catherine and Vincent have finally been able to move in together and got
to the point of planning their wedding. This does bring Tess and Heather
relating to Catherine for a different perspective as potential bridesmaids or
maid of honor. Previous seasons have gone into some rather dark places with the
stories utilizing kidnap, torture and in several episodes flashbacks to the
beginning when the program lost focus and spiraled afar from any altruistic
motives. The cast has been able to maintain interest in the characters to their
abilities to simultaneously develop individual traits with those who they
portray in many ways more importantly how they have established the
interpersonal dynamic between the leads with the façade of keeping major secrets
away from your best friends and family. The series has demonstrated consistent
ability to grow and change from one season to the next. The conclusion of this
season major goal been achieved; bringing fans to the point of anxiously
wondering what direction the show were going in his fourth and final season.
