The office of the President of the United States has been one of the most respected in the world. The forty three men that have held this office to date have all faced challenges both at home and abroad. They have risen to the top position in our nation’s government and have taken the praise and complaints of a country. Every president has had to face the sharp wit of political satirist during their term in the presidency. This was a lot to face when the media included only newspapers but now people have expressed their views of the president through television, radio and the internet. Perhaps it was mostly a matter of timing but the cable network Comedy Central became popular around the same time as George W. Bush took office as our latest president. The policies and decisions made by President Bush have been among the most controversial of any man who has held that esteemed office. He has seen his popularity slip to one of the lowest ratings of any American president. He also has been the stock in trade of numerous comedians along the way. Now, his days in office are dwindling rapidly and Comedy Central as decided to release a DVD through Paramount to salute the president and say farewell. Naturally, most of the material contained here is not likely to be well received by Bush supporters but for those who have questioned the choices of his administration you will find this disc hysterical. It contains episodes and vignettes from a number of Comedy Central’s line up of politically oriented series. From ‘South Park’ to ‘That’s My Bush’ it is all here. Years ago there was a series on CBS called ‘The Smother’s Brothers Comedy Hour’. It frequently took jabs at the then current president Lyndon Johnson and his involvement in the Vietnam War. When the series was cancelled for going too far in the eyes of the network executives President Johnson stated that the show would be missed. He realized that such comedy is part of our First Amendment right to free speech and that as President he had to support such expression even if he was the target of the humor. Hopefully as President Bush packs up to leave the White House he can look back and have the same view about humor such as is presented here in this collection.

The fun starts right off with the menu of the DVD. It is a picture of Bush standing in front of the White House; he is having a yard sale including items like the book ‘My Pet Goat’ and a box marked ‘Iraq Intelligence’. You make your selection my highlighting one of the items on the front lawn. There is also a poster of the yard sale included with the disc that is perfect for hanging in your rec room, dorm room or the wall of your detention cell at Gitmo. Most of the material here are full episodes of Comedy Central’s more politically active series. They are rounded out with a few bits form stand up comedies with bits about Bush.

Mind of Mencia

This is a one off skit which takes place in 2026. Mencia is a television news reporter presenting a story about George W. Bush now that he has been president of Iraq fir ten years. He took power after realizing that his approval rating was better there than in the States.

Frank Caliendo

This bit is a small portion of one of his many stand up routines that have appeared on Comedy Central. Caliendo was a regular on the popular late night sketch comedy series ‘Mad TV’ and he is an absolute master of impressions. Here he does one of President Bush that is dead on in the voice and mannerisms. He talks about how Bush looks like he is always staring directly into the sun. This is uncensored so a few naughty words do get out so parents be warned. He then riffs on the time President Bush got confused with the saying about ‘fool me once’. Like most material used in this type of humor Caliendo takes a public mistake and enlarges it tremendously.

South Park

Included here is episode 9 from season 10 ‘Mystery of the Urinal Deuce’ originally aired October 10, 2006. The South Park Elementary School is in an uproar when it is discovered that someone did a bowel movement in one of the urinals of the boy’s room. Cartman is certain that it is a conspiracy like the attacks on 9-11. Cartman gets into a heated argument with Kyle of that conspiracy and Cartman becomes determined to blow the lid off the government’s 9-11 conspiracy and prove that Bush and the corporations were behind it. Cartman goes online and comes up with something. He presents it at school during show and tell. Through convolved math and other dubious facts he pins both 9-11 and the urinal incident on Kyle. Kyle now has to prove his innocence and winds up too close to the truth which causes the President to pay him a visit.

Lewis Black's Root of All Evil

This is episode 5 from season 1 originally airing April 10, 2008. It pits Vice President Dick Cheney against Paris Hilton as the root of all evil. If you are going to do a collection about President Bush it is only fair to include his second in command. Actually a pretty good case is made for both since there are a lot of people who would be hard pressed to decide which is more evil. One supports the war while the other has been blamed for the fall of our culture; you decide which is which.

Lil' Bush: Resident of the United States

Shown here is episode 1 from season 1 originally airing June 13, 2007. Poppa Bush is upset about all the negative press about the war in Iraq and is determined to find something positive for the media to report on. Meanwhile Lil’ George discovers kissing.

That’s My Bush

Here you get ‘An Aborted Dinner Date’ which was episode one of the first season initially shown on April 2, 2001. This was a shorted lived series that turned the White House into a typical TV sit-com complete with a lazy maid and a wacky neighbor. In this story Bush is supposed to have a dinner to help clear up the differences between the Pro-Life and Pro-Choice camps. It happens to fall on the same night he made a dinner date with his wife.

Last Laugh ‘06

Once again we get Lewis Black but instead of being the mock judge on his current series he is at his best with his stand up routine. He is here in all his glory; veins throbbing on his head and his finger jabbing in the air to emphasize his topic. There are also bits from Comedy Central regulars like Greg Giraldo and Patton Oswalt.

Last Laugh ‘07

Like the previous segment this is a grouping of stand up bits concerning President Bush. They include an animated feature with Black, D.L. Hughley and Dave Attell. There is also another bit by Black in person.

This is a fun compilation of comedy; sort of a Comedy Central sampler to enjoy a variety of different shows. From the network’s point of view it is great advertising for their shows. For the audience it is a diversified way to have a few laughs.
